How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

To get a brilliant result on the exam, you need to spend some time preparing, but how much exactly?

Few manage to prepare and pass the GMAT in ideal conditions. Most candidates have to combine professional duties and other things with training, and therefore the duration of classes is strictly individual – it all depends on your circumstances.

In addition, the duration of training is determined by where the starting point is located, and whether the candidate has a serious knowledge base in the field of English and mathematics.

Let’s talk about the GMAT from the perspective of your maximum score personally – the best result you are able to get. The concept of your best score seems more logical than the idea of a target score (often chosen arbitrarily).

To get the best result possible, it takes time. Sometimes people take the test in a hurry, and they succeed – although they do not reach their own ceiling. But there are also those who, due to excessively prolonged preparation, lose their original pace.

How long should I prepare for the GMAT?

As experience shows, classes before the exam – if maintained at a good intensity – should take about three to six months. Increasing the timing does not always lead to an increase in the final score, often after passing a certain threshold, the effectiveness of training decreases.

Unlike other tests, the GMAT tests abilities rather than knowledge. Preparation for this exam can be considered as training before the marathon. You gradually expand your capabilities to achieve the best results on Day X. The lion’s share of the skills required to pass the test are formed during practical exercises. A lot of practical exercises.

According to the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the organization that conducts the GMAT test, those who manage to score 700+ points spend more than 90 hours preparing.

However, GMAC prudently notes: there is no direct causal relationship here. Longer classes do not guarantee that you will get a high result, but 100+ hours of training should be considered a convenient guideline.

Your natural abilities (which are not always adequately assessed) can have a certain impact on the mark. However, regardless of them, you will not be able to score your maximum score without conscientious training.

How to make training effective?

Classes before the GMAT are somewhat reminiscent of sports training: they should be persistent and daily.

Try to keep a constant rhythm – you should not abandon the training, and then return to it. In addition, you need to repeat all the topics found in the test, then you will not lose the already accumulated skills. If you throw a certain section for a while, focusing on other parts of the test, your knowledge will begin to evaporate.

Whatever your schedule, be sure to view preparation as a 3-step process. First of all, you will deal with topics and strategies. The second phase is the introduction of a time limit. And the third is the passage of mock tests (and the development of time distribution strategies) that allow you to achieve the level of psychological endurance that is necessary for a real exam.

What about GMAT Online?

Don’t forget: since there is no AWA essay in the online version of the GMAT, there is no break between the mathematical and verbal parts.

Try to take practice tests while in conditions similar to those that await you on the day of the exam. Of great importance here is the formation of the ability to resist mental fatigue (and the ability to apply related strategies that are suitable for you).

If you take the online GMAT, be sure to try to work with both virtual and real boards for notes in advance. It doesn’t matter where you end up taking the test – you still need to have an idea of what you have to do.

It’s also worth remembering: GMAT results are valid for 5 years. If possible, try to plan the time so that the exam does not coincide with the preparation for admission (for example, with the preparation of an essay) or events such as moving to a new place of work.

Your GMAT result is not a key element of the entry paper package, but it is still important. Therefore, be sure to take the time to achieve the maximum possible results for yourself.
