How to enroll or transfer to a US university

It all depends on the level of English and academic training. There are three options: Pathway, Direct and Transfer Admission. Let’s consider the methods in more detail.

Pathway

Pathway is a program of preparation for admission to universities and colleges. We talked about the Pathway in detail in the article “The Pathway Program: How to Enter the United States Without Exams”.. The pathway is suitable for students who do not have a very good level of English. After studying at the program, students enter universities with results from 6.5 points for IELTS or from 80 points for TOEFL. The Pathway program usually lasts a year. Most often, the university, to which the student then enters, counts all the subjects that were studied during the preparation. An additional plus of the program is the openness of the results. A student’s parents can quickly get an assessment of their academic performance.

Direct admission

To enter a US university directly, you need to pass the TOEFL, IELTS or GMAT language exam. You can enter the magistracy without a language exam. To do this, you need to pass an internal university test and request a GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS waiver (exemption from the exam). GMAT/TOEFL waiver can be obtained by a student whose average score of a certificate or diploma (GPA) is 3.2 points or higher. If the score is lower, you can enroll in the GMAT track program. There, the student will be prepared for the exam.

Transfer inflow

If a student is already studying at a university and wants to transfer to a US university, a transfer program will suit him. The main requirement is that the main credits (subjects) of specialties must coincide. For example: The student studied economics for two years and now wants to move on to the specialty “Finance and Accounting”. When translating, the list of subjects studied by the student is compared with the list of root subjects in the specialty “Finance and Accounting”. Related specialties have many coincidences, so the student can transfer. If you switch from journalism to an engineer, there will be very few coincidences. The university will not confirm such a transfer. If a student studied by correspondence, you can transfer only from a university that has no problems with accreditation. In this case, each US university has its own requirements for subjects. Usually it is about 32 credits, that is, about a year of study. It depends on the specialty.

Which internship to choose

At the universities with which we cooperate, there are two types of internships: Co-op and advanced training programs. To work after training, you need to get a permit – OPT.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

To work in the United States after graduation, you need to obtain Optional Practical Training (OPT) – a work permit. Any student can get OPT for one year. And then there’s STEM OPT, a three-year permit. It can be obtained by students who are engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Items need to be checked. For example, psychology or architecture is a science, but these specialties are not taken into account in all universities. This is a good opportunity to find a job in the United States by specialty.

Co-op

Co-op is a practice of the profile direction. On an F1 student visa, you can work up to 40 hours a week on campus and receive a salary. This practice is not suitable for everyone, because there are few options. You can get a job as an assistant librarian, an assistant professor or an administrator. If a student is studying to become an engineer, he has nowhere to work on campus. And under the Co-op program, he can do an internship in his specialty. After the end of the internship, the student will receive recommendations from the employer.

Certificate Programs

For those who have a job and need to improve their skills. The training lasts from four to eight months. To enroll, you do not need to pass the GMAT and GRE. After completing the course, you can enter the magistracy, credits are transferred. Such an internship is suitable for students who want to get a diploma or enter an MBA, but cannot yet pass the GMAT. On the course, you can prepare for exams and get an OTP for a year. And now we will talk about our partners: Northeastern University, Pace University, Tulsa University and Arizona State University.
